4 Top Destinations for Skiing and Après-Ski in Quebec

Written by: Anne Pélouas

A weekend or a full week in a cozy cottage during winter?
It’s the perfect excuse to hit some of Quebec’s best alpine ski slopes — and to enjoy après-ski at its finest, even in these unusual times.

“Winter is in full swing — it’s time to make the most of it,”
says Josée Cusson, Director of Communications and Marketing at the Association of Quebec Ski Resorts.
“With the recent snowfalls,” she adds, “ski resorts across the province are offering exceptional snow conditions this season!”

So, spotlight on four standout ski destinations and their charming après-ski scenes — stretching from the Eastern Townships to Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, with a few must-stop gems in Lanaudière and the Laurentians along the way.

🎿 Owl’s Head (Eastern Townships): Between Tradition and Renewal

As you drive toward Mansonville, in the Canton de Potton, the snow-covered slopes of Owl’s Head rise majestically in front of you — a breathtaking sight in winter.

At the base of the mountain, it’s impossible not to notice the transformation the resort has undergone since its acquisition in 2018 by a group of passionate local investors. The ski chalet and facilities have been completely revamped, blending modern design with warm, welcoming charm.

When it comes to snow quality, Owl’s Head doesn’t cut corners. In an era of shifting winters, the resort has invested in state-of-the-art snowmaking technology, ensuring consistently excellent conditions. The difference between natural and artificial snow? Practically invisible here — the surface feels smooth, fast, and flawless.

And then, there’s the view: from the summit, 753 metres above sea level, you’ll be treated to a spectacular panorama of Lake Memphremagog — one of those scenes that stays with you long after your final run.

Despite its modernization, Owl’s Head has kept its friendly, family-oriented atmosphere (with reasonable prices, too). The resort offers 125 acres of skiable terrain, a 540-metre vertical drop, 50 runs for all levels, and five lifts (one double chair and four quads).

A perfect mix of heritage, innovation, and stunning scenery, Owl’s Head remains one of Quebec’s most beloved — and accessible — ski destinations.

🧘‍♀️ My Après-Ski Favourites in the Eastern Townships

After a day on the slopes at Owl’s Head, treat yourself to some well-deserved relaxation:

  • Spa Bolton in Bolton-Est — unwind with a massage in a yurt by the Missisquoi River, lulled by the sound of flowing water. (Note: thermotherapy access is currently limited.)

  • Owl’s Bread Bakery in Magog — stop in for homemade meals, artisan breads, and irresistible pastries, all baked with love.

❄️ Mont-Édouard (Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean): A Powder Paradise

Just a few kilometres from the charming village of L’Anse-Saint-Jean, Mont-Édouard is famous for being one of Quebec’s snowiest mountains, with natural snow that lasts all season long.

This Saguenay landmark rises to 633 metres, offering a generous vertical drop and 32 trails served by two quad chairlifts.

It’s also a top destination for backcountry skiing — whether you’re a beginner or an expert. The resort features eight off-piste sectors across 200 acres of untouched mountain terrain. The Sacré-Cœur area is the most accessible, while the more remote zones are reserved for seasoned adventurers.

You can also join guided excursions like “Backcountry Discovery” or “Sky is the Limit!” — the perfect way to explore safely with local experts.

🍻 My Après-Ski Picks

  • Entre Chien et Loup, an eco-tourism company where you can meet a pack of friendly sled dogs or even book a dog sledding adventure right after your ski day.

  • La Chasse-Pinte Microbrewery, known for its organic, forest-inspired beers — ideal to enjoy by the fire in your cozy cottage rental.

🏔️ Val Saint-Côme (Lanaudière): Glades, Freestyle, and Family Vibes

A true icon of Lanaudière, Val Saint-Côme has been delighting skiers for over 40 years — and it’s still going strong. In 2020, the resort invested over a million dollars to upgrade its main lift and grooming equipment, ensuring top-quality runs and smooth conditions all season long.

With 36 trails (including 8 open at night), a 300-metre vertical drop, three chairlifts, and a t-bar, Val Saint-Côme combines natural glades, well-maintained slopes, and a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.

It’s also home to the Freestyle Skiing Excellence Centre, where you can catch World Cup mogul and aerial events — a true showcase of Canadian talent and energy!

🍽️ My Après-Ski Picks

  • Le Fumoir Saint-Damien — pick up some maple-smoked specialties like duck breast, marinated trout, or fondue meats to enjoy back at your cottage.

  • Parc régional de la Chute-à-Bull — a peaceful 6 km snowshoe trail along the Boule River, surrounded by cascades and winter waterfalls.

⛷️ Mont Habitant (Laurentians): Night Skiing Until 7 p.m.

A little hidden gem beside Saint-Sauveur, Mont Habitant is the perfect family ski hill, with a 183-metre vertical drop and 11 varied runs for all skill levels.
Its longest slope, La Cabane, stretches nearly a kilometre — gentle, scenic, and perfect for a relaxed ride.

If you took your time in the morning, no worries — you can still enjoy your “après-ski on skis” since Mont Habitant’s slopes are open and lit until 7 p.m.

🍕 My Après-Ski Picks

  • Le Trappeur Restaurant-Bar – while there’s no après-ski happy hour this year, you can grab delicious takeout before heading back to your chalet.

  • Pizzeria No. 900 – one of Saint-Sauveur’s best spots for wood-fired pizza. Call ahead, pick it up, and enjoy a perfect pizza night by the fire in your cottage.
