4 Heart-Pumping Adventures for Adrenaline Lovers

Written by: Ariane Arpin-Delorme

Since the early 2000s, extreme sports have been all the rage — especially among younger generations who seem driven by a desire to feel truly alive and give deeper meaning to their experiences. Over the years, however, the definition of what’s considered “extreme” has evolved.

Today, alongside traditional thrill-seeking activities like bungee jumping and skydiving, we’re seeing the rise of more accessible adventure sports that still deliver a healthy rush of dopamine, excitement, and adrenaline, but in ways that are easier to experience — and often closer to home.

ADRENALINE: Commonly called the “stress hormone,” adrenaline is released during moments of intense emotion or physical exertion. It gives the body an extra surge of energy to face danger, push through pain, or respond to oxygen deprivation — the ultimate spark behind every heart-pounding adventure.

4 Adventures for an Adrenaline Rush in Quebec

Looking to break your routine and step outside your comfort zone? Our travel writer tested four adrenaline-packed experiences — from white-water rafting and electric surfing to canyoning and hang gliding — to help you discover thrilling ways to embrace Quebec’s wilder side.

1. Conquer the Lachine Rapids (Montreal)

Whether you stay calm or let out a few therapeutic screams, a rafting trip through the Lachine Rapids is an unforgettable way to release energy, overcome fear, and simply have fun.

Despite the looming storm clouds, I head to Rafting Montréal in LaSalle for a descent down the mighty St. Lawrence River. My last rafting experiences — abroad — had been, well, epic (and a little terrifying). So even with my usual optimism, I was relieved when the energetic team of guides and trainees took the time to reassure us about safety and the thrill ahead.

As we wait for the rain to clear, our seasoned guide Bilal — a rafting and kayaking expert who’s been with the company since its founding in 1992 — explains how the rapids formed, demonstrates paddling techniques, and shares stories about the area. Once on the water, he confidently steers the raft, shouting instructions and cracking jokes, as we try to keep our cool (and our paddles) through the waves threatening to swallow both our composure and our sense of direction!

💦 Tip: Even if you’re nervous, go for it — the mix of fear, laughter, and exhilaration is the perfect adrenaline cocktail.

Wetsuit, life belt, helmet, and single paddle in hand, we climb aboard a sturdy bright yellow inflatable raft built for 6 to 8 adventurers. The experience is accessible and safe for everyone aged six and up, though our guide customizes the route to suit our slightly more daring group.

With each shout of “Down!” and “Up!”, we paddle hard to face the river’s most intense waves — the Outécoutos, Louis, the Devil’s Threshold, and the infamous Big John. The adrenaline builds as the raft dips and rises with each swell, the spray of the St. Lawrence River cooling our faces.

At the end of the run, there’s a chance to cap off the adventure with a refreshing swim right in the final set of rapids — though I miss my moment to jump safely! Still, the fun is guaranteed on this exhilarating introductory course, featuring rapids that range from Class I–II to III–IV for the brave.

Between the bursts of laughter and the power of the water, I try to pause and take in the stunning surroundings — a mix of wild and urban beauty, dotted with tiny islands that make this stretch of river feel both raw and alive. From start to finish, an undeniable thrill runs through me — the kind that only pure adventure can bring.

2. Take On the Majestic Richelieu River

You don’t need to wait for the perfect wave to experience the thrill of surfing! With Éco Surf Canada, you can ride the water in a whole new way thanks to their electric surfboards — a fun, eco-friendly, and accessible adventure for anyone aged 16 and up.

Similar to a paddleboard but powered by an adjustable motor with two speeds, electric surfing is perfect not only for adrenaline seekers but also for those who simply want to glide peacefully across the water and take in the scenery.

During my stay in a Bora Bora–style hut at Domaine Pourki, right next to Marina Ryan in Sabrevois, I decided to explore the Richelieu River in a completely original way. Despite a breezy afternoon, and under the watchful guidance of François, the founder of this young and innovative company, I hopped on an eco-friendly, fully electric surfboard for my very first test ride.

After a quick demo and short introductory course, I got used to the wireless controller, which offers adjustable power settings for all skill levels. I set off on my own for about an hour, cruising down the Richelieu — the battery typically lasts 40 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace and power level.

Beginner’s luck struck: I managed to stand up on my first try and rode quite a distance without falling! My next few attempts were more challenging, especially with the wind and choppy waves, but riding the ANTA model — the brand’s most stable and versatile board — made the experience incredibly fun and rewarding.

Other models can even reach speeds of up to 45 km/h, making this one of Quebec’s most exciting new summer activities. Whether you’re chasing a rush of adrenaline or seeking a new way to connect with nature, Éco Surf Canada is an adventure worth adding to your bucket list!

3. Descend the Falls in Style

If you’re looking to test your limits, sharpen your technique, and experience nature from an entirely new perspective, canyoning down the Jean-Larose Waterfall is a must-try adventure. Offered by Canyoning-Québec, a pioneer in this sport in the province, it’s one of Quebec’s most thrilling outdoor experiences — and it’s accessible to everyone.

When I first tried canyoning, I was a complete beginner to this fast-growing adventure sport — an activity that involves rappelling down waterfalls and occasionally swimming from one natural pool to another. Luckily, the Jean-Larose Waterfall site caters to all experience levels, from curious beginners to seasoned thrill-seekers.

(I actually enjoyed it so much that I later treated myself to another canyoning experience — this time in Coroico, Bolivia!)

Accompanied by my friend Valérie — my self-appointed photographer for the day — I geared up with all the necessary equipment provided by the company and took part in a short training session to get familiar with rope descent techniques. Once ready, the real adventure began: two vertical waterfalls, 12 and 19 metres high, under the supervision of professional guides.

The site is absolutely spectacular, with deep natural pools shimmering at the base of each cascade. At one point, I decided to take the plunge — a 7-metre jump straight into the water — and it was pure joy. The rush of cold water, the roar of the falls, and the adrenaline surge made it an experience I’ll never forget.

We continued with two more vertical descents — another 12 and 19 metres — and each drop brought its own mix of thrill and wonder. Even now, I still get chills thinking about it!

4. Soar Above the World

For those who want to awaken every sense, challenge themselves, and rediscover their place in the world, hang gliding(or paragliding) offers a one-of-a-kind experience — a perfect blend of freedom, courage, and awe.

With my ongoing quest to feel as free as the wind, I had promised myself to try every air sport possible. Among them, hang gliding called to me the most — no motor, just the wind and an instructor to guide me. I also wanted to see Montérégie from a new perspective — not just through its vineyards, but from the sky.

After a short briefing from my instructor, I pull on a sky-blue flight suit and step onto the launch field. My heart races as I watch the other delta wings, light gliders soaring gracefully above the horizon. Before I know it, my name is called — it’s my turn. I settle into the two-seater glider with golden wings, ready for takeoff.

We run together down the hill, and suddenly — we’re airborne. The moment we lift off, a wave of pure magic washes over me. The view of the farmlands below is stunning, everything so small, so serene. The strength of the wind both fascinates and humbles me. At one point, my instructor even lets me steer — after all, it’s my birthday!

Whether you’re 7 or 97 years old, this is an experience to treat yourself to at least once in a lifetime — the kind that makes you feel truly alive.

🪂 Our writer personally paid for her hang-gliding experience with Distance Vol Libre, located in Saint-Paul-d’Abbotsford. Please note that this company is temporarily closed due to a shortage of instructors — stay tuned for updates!
